Let’s face it. Cleaning out your closet isn’t fun unless you’re doing so to prepare for a custom closet installation, in which case the anticipation of the closet transformation to come can be enough to energize you for the task. At Inspired Closets, we’ll help you manage the preparation step ensuring your closet is ready for our team on installation day.
The renovation of any room is a chance at a fresh start. A “clean slate” that represents an opportunity to establish new habits that make getting and staying organized easier. And your custom closet installation is no exception. The way you prepare is critical to how your new custom closet will function and how it will make you feel each time you move in and out of the space. This is why we recommend investing a little bit of time in decluttering and purging your belongings and giving your closet a deep clean. Doing so does require you to make decisions about what to do with your belongings. For some, engaging a professional organizer can be a tremendous help. For others, we offer guidance gained from years of helping clients prepare for a custom closet installation.
For every item that you touch, place it in a designated spot to either Keep, Donate, or Discard. Items you Keep are things that you wear regularly or simply love too much to Donate or Discard. Items you Donate are gently used and either haven’t been worn in a year or more, aren’t your size, or are things you just don’t like anymore. Items you Discard are in poor condition, torn, have a hole, or are stained. For the items designated as Keep, simply relocate these to another room during installation. We recognize that your other closets are likely full and that piles of clothes on a spare bed make getting ready for your day challenging. That’s why we offer garment racks that make it easy to access your belongings during installation.

Now that your belongings have been removed from your closet, it’s time to get the space ready for installation. Our team will manage the removal of your existing closet system and prepare your walls for your new closet system to be installed. If you are renovating the space with a fresh coat of paint or new flooring, both of these projects need to be completed before your installation date. We are happy to work around that schedule to make sure the time we spend working in your home does not conflict with any other necessary improvements to create a space we know you will love. Once these steps have been completed, we recommend that you give your empty closet a deep clean, scrubbing the baseboards, cleaning the walls, and making sure it’s in great shape for your new closet system installation.
With decluttering, cleaning, and renovation complete, it’s time for your custom closet to be installed, and our goal is to make this step as easy as can be.
